Tips for No Spend January

Most of you know by now that I’m attempting to do no spend January this month. I spoke more about my financial goals this year in my 2023 goals blog post - see that here. A lot of you asked for tips on how to spend less money each month so I’ve compiled your tips in today’s blog post! If you have any tips that weren’t included in this post, feel free to leave them in the comments!

No Spend January Tips

  • Stop auto saving card info

  • Meal planning

  • Make an amazon list so you can see what you still need by the end of the month

  • Think of a chance to reset and get creative, not a punishment

  • Put in cart, wait 24 hours before purchasing

  • Closet clean out/capsule wardrobe

  • leave credit card at home

  • Ibotta

  • Take yourself off email lists for stores that you like to shop at

  • Try to do all errands/bill paying on weekends, don’t spend during the week

  • Skip a week of grocery shopping, just eat what you have

  • Delete amazon app from your phone

  • Keep track/a list of what you do spend, it helps to see it written out

  • Keep a certain amount of cash on you each week and try to only spend that

  • Plan ahead what you’re going to make for dinner

  • Make a list of specific no buy items

  • Skip eating anything you didn’t make at home

  • Audit your subscriptions and remove 2

  • Delete Apple Pay

  • Live below your means

  • Do order pickups for items you need so that you aren’t tempted to buy other stuff

  • Don’t make any stops going to or from work

  • Make realistic baby steps

  • Create a sinking fund

  • Look through CC bills for recurring charges and reconsider what’s needed

  • Pantry/freezer challenge

  • Write all fixed and variable excpenses

  • Use cash envelopes

  • Only put on card what you can pay off every month

  • Keep a separate bank acct for long term savings and true emergencies

  • Frugal friends podcast

  • Pack your lunch daily

  • Call cable provider for deals

  • Set up monthly auto deposit into savings

  • Budget book

  • Stay out of stores

  • Tell someone else to keep you accountable

  • Dates at home or have friends over

  • Highlight days in your planner that you don’t spend outside of parameter

  • Put phone down and read a book or do something else instead of online shopping

  • Try to remember what you are saving for

  • Try to save $200/month until December every year for xmas presents
